What
is Link Popularity?
As
a way of placing relevancy to sites for particular keywords or keyphrases,
search engines build a virtual map of what sites link to each other
and in particular which pages link to each other. So if a site was about
'Model Aeroplanes' and contained 10 pages which all linked to each other
and each contained information on 'Model Aeroplanes' (one about the
costs involved, one about the tools required, one about the different
makes etc), the search engines would see this as more relevant than
a site that contains one page about 'Model Aeroplanes'.
Link
popularity is also dependant upon how many sites link to a particular
page and the content stored at the linking sites. So if for example
there were two sites on 'Model Aeroplanes' and both were deemed to have
the same relevancy by a search engine based on the content, a deciding
factor would be how many sites linked to each. If the number of sites
linking to both was the same, the next contributing factor would be
the quality of content at the linking sites. So if the first site had
more links to it from sites containing information on 'Model Aeroplanes',
the first would be considered more relevant.
This
wraps up the topic of Link Popularity but if you would like more information
on its use in search engines, Google have an excellent article on Link
Popularity which they call PageRank.
